Ancient Biohacking Wisdom: How Traditional Chinese Medicine Supports Energy, Balance and Wellbeing

Discover how acupuncture, qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine offer a deeper approach to biohacking for your health by working with energy, emotions and whole-body balance.

Long before wellness trends and “biohacking” became mainstream, ancient healing systems were already exploring how to optimise the body, calm the mind and create a more connected life. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long viewed health as more than the absence of illness — it is about balance, vitality, emotional harmony and alignment with your highest self. Today, many of these ancient principles feel more relevant than ever.

Long before the word “biohacking” became a phrase, the ancients were already looking deeply into what reinforced a good life, not only free from disease, but also balanced one’s emotions and connected them to their highest selves. For these people, good health was not separate from connection to their spirit, and in fact it was considered that poor health was an indication that one had compromised their highest truth.

Health as Integrity and Alignment

Living with this integrity means to acknowledge all aspects of yourself and to integrate it into your life. This included emotions, your thoughts, and your connection to the divine.

All things being made of energy, your thoughts, your emotions, and your environment, all carry a frequency. The ancients of China believed that certain emotions were stored in different organs within the body. Anger issues are almost always related to a toxic liver, fear is stored in the kidneys, pensiveness in the spleen, grief in the lungs, and joy in the heart.

Why Balance Matters in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Much study into plant medicine, acupuncture, energy exercises, breath work, mediation, food and lifestyle was invested into balancing all the different components of one’s energy system. Like a finely tuned machine, the body works optimally when all the pistons are firing.

So if you are tired, feeling dull, and lifeless, the Insta health gurus will sell you all sorts of supplements, each claiming to hack your health and give you an energetic advantage. The truth is that you can put the best fuel into your system, but if that engine of yours is leaking, disfunctional, worn out, and encased in toxic sludge, the results will not show.

What Biohacking Means Through a Chinese Medicine Lens

When Chinese medicine practitioners talk about “biohacking”, we are talking about fine tuning each organ system to do the functions they were designed for, we are talking about clearing the energy pathways of pathogens, we are talking about working with our deepest emotions to see if they are in alignment with our highest good.

Energy is profoundly powerful, constantly moving and forever transmuting. To understand and work with energy is to work with the matrix of this reality. Understanding energy is truly biohacking your body. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine work on the premise of energy as the fabric of all life. Acupuncture points tap into the energy pathways within the body, and herbal medicine is chosen for the energetic quality it has on the human body as opposed to the biomedical benefits.

The Power of Qigong and Movement Medicine

How Traditional Chinese Medicine Supports Energy, Balance and Wellbeing

The ancient practice of “qigong” incorporating movements and breathwork is literally translated to mean the practice of working with “energy”. It not only works with the cultivation of energy, but also the regulation and movement of it within the body.

I am reminded of an inspirational video I once saw in my 20’s while living in Canada. While at a Gregg Braden conference in Seattle, I watched in awe as three Chinese medicine doctors performed medical qigong on a patient with bladder cancer. A nurse technician showed the result of the tumour in real time as the doctors focused their “qi” into the woman’s bladder to dissolve the cancer. The tumour was resolved within three minutes.

Expanding Our Understanding of Healing

While this may seem magical or even a trick of smoke and mirrors, I would argue that our paradigm is holding us into rigid belief systems that no longer serve us. We are much more powerful than we think.

As someone that has practised qigong, I can anecdotally say that it has changed my life, and my perceptions about reality, and that I look forward to the day when this technology and teachings is widely available.
